自造社成立于2002年，宋涛、邵帆、阿城是最早的发起人。
自造社，一个崇尚本土设计制造的集合角色，在本色的东方精神下，旨在进行文脉相承的设计哲学的传承推广。它提倡在今日“全球化”的时代风潮中，积极冷静地审视地域文化中的精华，在处于弱势的文化境遇中对传统给予更多的重视。“自造”，是对原创制造甚至是对手工艺的尊崇；而将来自各方带有“自造”品质的设计力量积聚为“社”的前提，则是对朴素精神、稳重特质、气韵贯通且互为滋养的生活哲学的尊敬。
作为中国的设计师，以中国传统的精神作为设计灵感，是一种必然趋势。这不仅因为中国传统本身所特有的美感和默默流淌在中国人血液中的审美情怀使然，也是自造社的中国设计师努力恢复传统文化的责任感，使世人重新发现和认识中国传统文化中美仑美奂的造型艺术及其所具有的深厚生命力！
Self-made Company was established in 2002. In the eye of Song Tao as its founder, the purpose of design is the combination between its own traditional form with the contemporary culture. A Chinese designer must choose the representative symbol of classic furniture as his or her designing element.
